I got quite a nasty heat rash under my breasts late last week. It got worse on Saturday, but yesterday it started to get better. I am trying to keep cool and am also putting powder on a couple of times a day. I think it's time to get a professionally fitted bra to help keep these big things from sagging and rubbing on my chest! (Although I have read that it's good to wait until the last month to get fitted for a nursing bra, oh well.)

Well, I missed the Olympic torch. It was over 2 hours behind schedule coming into my city, so I went on to work instead of waiting to watch it be carried by my house.
We are planning to us cloth diapers, so I have been searching for a diaper service. There used to be one in town, but their web page says they have moved and just sell stuff now. I'm still searching, though. This page, Bloomers FAQ has some good information.

I realized today that I haven't really been around a pregnant woman on a regular basis before. My sister has been pg, but I saw her only every couple of weeks most of time, and I have had several pg coworkers, but none worked in the same room as me, so I didn't notice when they came in or left or how often they ate or things like that.
I got the results of my glucose tolerance screening -- borderline eleveated. Bummer! Actually I have been feeling wierd quite a bit the past week, like knowing I should eat but not knowing what would make me feel better. The 3 hour test is recommended, so I talked with a lab technician today and got instructions. She said anytime in the next week or so would be okay. I definitely won't be doing it tomorrow, though, because the Olympic torch is coming right in front of my house in the morning!

Birth of a father is a nice article of a birth from the Dad's perspective. It does end up with a c-section, though, and I can't help but wonder if she hadn't had the epidural if it could have been avoided. Here are the things that stuck out to me:
"Our birth plan is a simple one: 'I want drugs.'" and
"The epidural, not unexpectedly, has slowed down the contractions to every four minutes, so the doctor starts [her] on Pitocin to speed up the contractions." (my emphasis)... and
"...women on an epidural can't [use the squat bar] because the sedative causes a loss of sensation in the legs." they also can't move around and change positions in other ways, except rolling to one side or the other... and
"[She] keeps pushing for the next 90 minutes." okay, I know sometimes pushing can take a long time [The doctor says] "Your baby's a sunny-side up baby, He's facing up instead of down, which makes it harder and longer to push, but it's common and completely normal." at least something is normal... and
After 2 1/2 hours of pushing, all from bed, the doctor "advises a cesarean delivery."
The baby and mom both ended up fine, which is what is really the most important thing, but I can't help but wonder if she could have avoided the c-section if she could have moved around, especially since there were no other statements indicating that the baby was in distress.

After the birth, the doctor told us that the baby's cord was wrapped around her body 3 times, preventing her from moving down and causing the oxygen supply to be reduced. This story didn't say anything about anything like that. Food for thought.

The class went fine last night. There were 6 couples. I am due the latest of all of us. And I was the only one who definitely wants to go natural. I was really surprised by that! One or two of the other gals seemed undecided, but leaning toward medication of some kind. We watched a film of 2 natural births, with the husbands being very encouraging & supportive. Afterward, my DH said that maybe hiring a doula wouldn't be such a bad idea afterall... he didn't really want to be a "cheerleader" for several hours. (That's fine with me, it's not his style of support anyway.)
Our teacher is a former doula also, and she admits to having fairly radical opinions in relation to hospital procedures. She did emphasize at the beginning of class that Lamaze is for educating the couple to make the best decision for themselves, not to push any one way of doing things. This will get interesting when we start Bradley classes on Sunday.

Our childbirth preparation class at the hospital starts tonight. It is a shorted version of their Lamaze class (only 4 weeks instead of 6), so they don't call it "Lamaze", but it is supposed to almost the same, just less in-class practice. We decided to go ahead and take it even though we are signed up for Bradley childbirth classes starting next Sunday also. DH and I are the type of people who like to get as much information as possible, plus this way we can compare the methods and information taught in both classes.

I had my glucose tolerance screening test today. The drink wasn't as bad as I expected, but I did have to tell myself that after 2 swallows my head spinning was psychosymatic, that it was too soon for the sugar to be doing anything. Afterwards, I took a nap, which was probably a mistake. I should have eaten a sandwich or something first because when I woke up I felt worse. I lost 2 pounds this month. My doctor wasn't overly concerned, but he did tell me to make sure that I eat plenty of protein. I'll work on that.

I have joined FlyLady.net and am hoping that 15 minutes a day will help get the house ready for the baby. We have a lot of clutter and a lot of collectibles, plus the current "computer room" is going to become the nursery, so there is a lot of rearranging to do.
My Glucose Tolerance Screen test is tomorrow morning. Since I'm hypoglycemic, I doubt that I'll get gestational diabetes, but I know the test won't be too fun.

We celebrated Christmas with the other side of the family yesterday. Baby got more presents! A hooded towel, 2 books (The Christmas Story and Walt Disney's Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes), and one of those Tupperware balls with the 10 shapes to put in the holes. I'm feeling pretty good now, although my feet and ankles were puffy and stiff after 2 airplane flights.
